This trick will help reduce the amount of time you spend on bad dates and increase the odds of meeting someone with who you truly connect. What's the secret? You need to get clear on your dating strategy.
As a professional woman, you have likely heard of SMART goals. These are goals that are:
- Specific: What do I want to accomplish?
- Measurable: How will I know when it is accomplished?
- Achievable: How realistic is the goal, based on other constraints?
- Relevant: Does this seem worthwhile?
- Time-bound: When?
So, when you set your New Year resolutions, you probably run them through the SMART criteria and figure that you are good to go. Alas no. To be successful in dating, you need more than a SMART goal.
SMART Goals won't ensure you meet a nice normal guy to date
While a goal is a great first step, to achieve the goal you need to break it down into a plan that will enable you to make it a reality. This is true whether you are an entrepreneur who wants to increase your annual revenue, a new homeowner who needs to renovate her kitchen, or a single woman looking for a loving, long-term relationship.
As a professional woman, you likely spend a good part of your working life developing annual plans, staffing plans, marketing plans, and financial plans. But most of us don't feel like dating is the right place to have a plan.
That’s because the idea of having a dating strategy seems at odds with the magic of falling in love. We love the idea of meeting someone serendipitously as we go about our normal life. In this narrative, finding true love is effortless and the likelihood that he will have the looks, charm, and personal fortune of Hugh Jackman is high. This is a myth that Hollywood moviemakers have confused us with for decades.
Your dating strategy is your business plan for love
While the idea of meeting someone while you are waiting in line at your local coffee shop is compelling, it’s not an empowered approach to finding a great partner.
"If you don't know where you're going, you'll end up someplace else.” - Yogi Berra
While it is easy to laugh at Yogi Berra, he’s right. If you don't determine what you want in a relationship and make a plan for achieving it, you may end up in a relationship that doesn't suit you.
A far better approach is to get clear on things like:
- What you are looking for in a partner
- Where you are going to meet men and how many
- How you're going to screen potential partners
- And what you'll do to keep your spirits up during the process
Ready to start building your own dating strategy?
Start by taking some time to consider your past dating experiences. What went well? What didn’t? What would you like to do differently? What tools or resources do you need to help you stay on track?
Next, consider the following questions:
- What, if any limiting beliefs are keeping you single?
- Do you know what you are looking for in a partner?
- How will you know when you've found it?
- What is your plan for meeting men?
- What is your first date strategy?
- How will you deal with dates that become problematic?
- How will you maintain momentum if dating becomes discouraging?
- Have you identified the resources that you need to support you and ensure that this is the year that you meet your Mr. Right?
Organize what you have discovered in a way that makes sense for you. Try a vision board, a dating manifesto, or even just a dating checklist that you review as you leave for a date. Whatever you use, commit to making it a living document that you review regularly and evolve as needed.
