How to end a dating profile in 3 easy steps
One question that comes up often when my clients first go online is how to end their dating bio. Once you have shared everything that you want your potential future Mr. Right to know about you, what comes next?
If we look at online dating from a marketing perspective, your dating bio is your offer and the product is you. Your target market is the type of man that you want to date and, as with the best marketing offers, you will want to include a call to action (CTA) and the end of your bio.
If you have written and polished your dating profile to show what is unusual and special about you, you have the offer. Next, you need to define your target (the kind of guy you want to date) and end with your call to action. Let’s walk through it step by step.
What you are looking for in a relationship and partner?
Write a line or two about what you are looking for in a mate. Dating apps like OkCupid and eharmony prompt you to include your preference with questions like:
eHarmony: The most important thing that I’m looking for in a person:
OkCupid: ββWhat I'm actually looking for
It is critically important to define what you are looking for honestly. If you are looking for something long-term and monogamous, this is the time to say so. Likewise, if your idea of long-term is only one night, share that. Read more about describing the person you are looking for here.
Mention any deal breakers
Part of defining your ideal guy is defining who you’re not interested in dating. Therefore you will also want to be sure to mention any deal breakers in this section. Here is a good place to share things like how far you are willing to travel for a relationship or wanting children out in the open. Mention your deal breakers positively, but don’t be afraid to include them.
The definition of success here is to be honest about what you want so that you don’t waste your time with men who don’t align with what you are looking for.
Since it can be helpful to look at other women's bio examples, I’ve included some below.
Perfect. I love “something to respect”, although if she means “someone to respect” that might be clearer. In any case, you get the sense that this is a principled person who is looking for someone similar.
Typo aside, this description makes it clear that she is looking for something long-term with someone who is no bullshit. And she keeps it positive by making a joke about him looking hot.
Here is another great example of both what she is and isn’t looking for. A man who is looking for something casual would be wise to move on to the next bio.
This woman has done a nice job of making it clear that she wants a man who is a bit more traditional and who can also be her best friend.
End your dating bio with your call to action
The best way to end your profile is a call to action. For a dating profile, the action that you want the guy to take is to message you if he is interested.
OkCupid does a nice job helping new daters include a call to action with their question:
You should message me if
Again, here are some good examples :
I love that this woman has made it clear that she wants to quickly move from messaging to a real date. If she takes out “actually”, it would sound more positive. She might also what to specify a date idea something like a walk in the park or a glass of wine at a local wine bar.
This woman has done a great job of combining humor with her top requirement for her next partner. Since every reader may not appreciate her sense of humor, she is also screening for someone who gets her.
This woman makes it clear that negative and complaining isn't the right match for her, and she does it positively. By pointing out that open communication can sometimes be intimidating and that passion has both a positive and a negative side, she gives a sense that she is a mature person open to all of life's experiences.
